Sacraments

The Sacraments are at the heart of Catholic life. They are not simply ceremonies marking important moments in our lives, but visible signs of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to his Church. Through them, Christ continues to act among his people: forgiving, healing, strengthening and nourishing us throughout our journey of faith.

The Catholic Church celebrates seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, the Holy Eucharist, Penance and Reconciliation (Confession), Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Holy Matrimony. Together they accompany the Christian from the beginning of the life of faith to its final earthly moments.

Through Baptism we are freed from sin, born again in Christ and incorporated into his Church. In Confirmation, the grace of Baptism is strengthened through the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life, we receive Christ himself – truly present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, sins committed after Baptism are forgiven and our friendship with God is restored. Through the Anointing of the Sick, Christ brings grace, strength and consolation to those suffering from serious illness or the frailty of old age.

The Sacraments of Holy Orders and Holy Matrimony are particularly directed towards the service of others and the building up of the Church. Through Holy Orders, bishops, priests and deacons are ordained for the service of God’s people; in Matrimony, a man and a woman give themselves to one another in a lifelong covenant of faithful love, open to the gift of new life.

The Sacraments remind us of something fundamental about the Catholic faith: God does not remain distant from us. He comes to meet us through his Church, using visible and tangible signs – water, oil, bread and wine, spoken words and human touch – to communicate his grace.

Through the Sacraments, Christ accompanies us throughout our lives, drawing us ever more deeply into communion with himself and preparing us for eternal life with God.
